This permanent earthwork, covering 16,000 sq. ft. of slope, is nestled in four quadrants between newly- built pedestrian ramps connecting the Greenbridge mixed-income housing development to White Center's central business district along SW 98th Street.
Pillow Field is comprised of two hundred twenty-seven mounded earth “pillows” varying in size and shape to represent the neighborhood's multi-cultural diversity. The surface is unified by a soft blanket of creeping thyme, a perennial evergreen ground cover that will maintain the mound shapes and bring a burst of vibrant pink blossoming carpet in late spring through summer.
Pillow Field may be seen from many different vantage points, including from the stairs that cut vertically, and on the ramp that extends the installation's full length, which is planted with Fountain Grasses to enhance a leisure walk.
